If you’re anything like me cardio in the gym is your idea of “hell”, but give me a bush walk or hike like Hunua Falls and I’m down.

Situated about an hour east from Auckland, Hunua Falls is a popular spot. With walks ranging from 20mins to 4 hours it’s great for all types of people. We (me and my trusty fitness friend Ilise) chose the Cossey – Massey loop a 3hr walk through the bush to Wairoa dam and back and with our medium/fast pace we completed it in 2hrs – must have been eager to get back to the ice cream van!

Not going to lie it is hard work with a good pace but who cares with the picturesque surroundings and the idea of a refreshing dip at the end – Hunua falls, you were great!

Points to note:

  • The treks are very weather dependent – always check the website before going.
  • The track are well maintained but sandals are not a good idea – unless you like blisters.
  • It DOES get busy – we started at 10am and as we were coming back to the car park it was getting super busy.
